Navigating Florida’s Medical Marijuana Program: Tips from Iona Cannabis Clinic

Navigating Florida's Medical Marijuana Program

Even though the medical marijuana program in our state of Florida has been in place for years, for many, there’s still a lot to learn. Iona Cannabis Clinic is here with a quick guide to let you in on what you need to know about medical marijuana.

What is Medical Marijuana?

“Medical marijuana” includes all of the parts of a cannabis plant – the seeds, resin extracted from any part of the plant, and all compounds. Certain products can contain various amounts of THC, which is the chemical compound that produces the “high” that marijuana is known for.  There are also CBD products available for those that prefer to NOT have the “high” effect.

Who Qualifies for Medical Marijuana Program?

There is a list of qualifying medical conditions that, if diagnosed, can qualify you for a medical marijuana card. Here are some of those conditions:

  • Cancer
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • HIV/AIDS
  • PTSD
  • ALS
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Chronic Pain

Keep in mind that you will need to be approved by your doctor in order to use medical marijuana as treatment – even if your condition is not listed.

What is a Medical Marijuana Card?

Your medical marijuana card is a state-issued identification card that allows you to obtain medical marijuana from licensed dispensaries. To get a card, you must be approved by a qualified physician such as one of our knowledgable doctors.

Every patient (or their legal representative) is required to have a medical marijuana card to obtain medical marijuana.

Applying for a Medical Marijuana Card

At Iona Cannabis Clinic we do all we can to make applying for a medical marijuana card as smooth as possible. If our doctors do deem you qualify for a medical marijuana card, our staff can help you with submitting an application to The Department of Health’s Medical Marijuana Use Registry. The application is pretty simple, but it must include a passport photo. You can either submit this application online or mail a hard copy to the Office of Medical Marijuana Use. There is a $75 application fee that coincides with your submission.

After you submit your application and are approved, you’ll receive a confirmation email.  The State will also mail a physical copy of your medical marijuana card to your address – this card is required for you to fill an order of medical marijuana at any licensed dispensary.

Your card is good for one year, and you must renew it (along with the same application fee and any other required documents) 45 days before the expiration date to keep it active. Get Medical Marijuana Card in
